Jeff Skinner has had a solid NHL career, with pieces of high-end production. In 2018-19 he scored 40 goals with the Buffalo Sabres, and before and after that season he remained a consistent attacking threat with both the Carolina Hurricanes and the Sabres. He was a normal scorer of 30 goals. After the Sabres purchased Skinner’s contract before the 2024-25 season, the Edmonton Oilers Signed him, hoping that he could bring secondary score and veteran stability.

But in Edmonton he never really found traction. His 2024–25 season was not disastrous-16 goals, 29 points but he did not lock a top-six role, and whether he really got a fair chance to compete to compete one. In the end, Skinner’s One Year did not deliver what the team needed with the oilers. He left after the season.
The sharks grabbed Skinner out of season this season
When the San Jose Sharks signed Skinner to one One -year -old deal of $ 3 million, Many fans blinked with his eyes. Why sign Skinner after such a bad season? He would certainly not be an important part of their rebuilding. Why he?

With elite views such as Macklin Celebrini that formed the core of the Forward group, San Jose sought another veteran who could score, mentor and mixes with the youthful energy of the team. Last season Tyler Toffoli showed how valuable that kind of presence can be, the withdrawal and supply of both production and leadership. With Skinner, the sharks add another class act to that mix – someone who has been in the competition knows how to wear himself and help set the tone for younger players who come up.

It is impossible to deny that Skinner never got it together in Edmonton. Limited Power-Play time and constantly shifting line assignments prevented him from setting up alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. Coaches sometimes leaned on him as a Bottom-Six option, although his ice age floated near the lows of the career. Despite the less than ideal role, he produced 29 points and a plus-1 rating.
What skinner and toffoli have in common, and why the sharks might be on something
When the Sharks signed Toffoli the last season, it was a smart move. He had a great season-30-plus goals, solid minutes and exactly the type of steady presence that a reconstruction team needs. Now they have added Skinner for a one -year -old deal, and it feels like they are following the same playbook.
Both Toffoli and Skinner are experienced wing players who have experienced a lot in the competition. They each had big seasons, bounced around a bit and now land in San Jose with something to prove. They can still score, still help with the Power Play, and perhaps even more importantly, they know what is needed to stay in the competition. That is a big problem for a young team trying to build something from the ground.
Toffoli made the best of his chance. If Skinner can do the same, the sharks may have found another smart veteran with a low risk that she gives more than just figures.
What San Jose saw: Secret value, not just statistics
What San Jose’s attention attracted about Skinner was not only his numbers, but also the tools behind it. Their scouts came to believe that he still has the speed, consciousness and instincts to find open ice and put pucks on the net. He continued to look like a man who hardened opportunities with a high excess, even with limited use and he is known in the competition as a stable pro and a good teammate. That is why Skinner fits the blueprint of the Sharks: a lace -up scorer that brings experience and hockey feeling without costing premium cap space.

The sharks were not only shopping for a name – they were aimed at the type of presence that can help guide a reconstruction schedule. After two consecutive seasons lasting last in the NHL (including a competition-striking 20-50-12), they decided to fill their schedule with players who could learn young stars what winning looks like in the dressing room as on the ice. Skinner is expected to contain a much stable place in the forward lines of San Jose-probably as a top-six wing player with regular Power-Play obligation that he hardly saw in Edmonton.
For Skinner, a new canvas (and maybe a comeback)
At the age of 33, some can roll with their eyes. But remember: he scored 35 goals and 82 points in 2022-23. The goal of Skinner is simple – make consistent opportunities, play on his strengths and remind the competition that he still has a lot left in the tank. The sharks bet that stability and self -confidence can restore its scoring spark.
For Edmonton, Skinner represented a plug-and-play-piece iMand that could absorb minutes without disturbing the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl core. The Oilers prioritize youth and chemistry above the recasting of the veteran depth. But San Jose sees it differently: a scorer of 373 goals that still has some juice and can help accelerate the development for the children. It is a classic rebuilding vs. Contend Philosophy Split.
Instead of seeing this as a lateral movement, consider it the second act of Skinner. In Edmonton he became underented; In San Jose he is about to get the chance to thrive with more opportunities and responsibility. If he reverses that target score touch and helps to elevate young sharks, this can quietly become one of the smartest signing sessions of low risk of low season.
Was Skinner’s bad oilers’ season a one -off?
After a long and productive NHL career – even if it never contained deep play -off runs – Skinner still has something to prove. His year in Edmonton was not a disaster, but it was not the impact season at which the oilers had hoped. Was it just a sign that his game ends, or did Edmonton go too quickly from a proven scorer?

That is what San Jose bets. If Skinner finds a consistent role and some of his old finishing touch, a season of 30 goals is not excluded. For both players and team, this second act at the right time is perhaps the right fit.
