At the beginning of 2025, the Spaniard reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open. Unfortunately for her, she was unable to continue after losing to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.
Although the start of the year brought some positives, the rest of the season was quite tough and challenging for Badosa. Once again, the 28-year-old’s chronic back problems started to cause her major problems and she ended up playing only ten main draws after Australia. And it was difficult for the Spaniard to find any rhythm as she usually lost early.
After playing her final tournament of the 2025 season in September, the former world number 2 took some time off to deal with her back injury. She returned to action by participating in the World Tennis League – an exhibition event that took place in India last week.
“Spanish women’s tennis needs Badosa; she is the emblematic figure, the player at the highest level with a strong personality. I hope she will be in full physical shape and find the right balance to play at her best, both technically and mentally,” Corretja told Eurosport.
Corretja: Badosa is a player destined for Grand Slam victory
“I think Paula is a player destined for a Major title, to reach the pinnacle of her dreams, and she will only achieve that if she avoids injuries and significant fluctuations in her form. I believe that mentally she has always dreamed of achieving something unimaginable for most, and I believe she is capable of it,” Corretja explained.
For Badosa to have any chance of becoming a Grand Slam champion, she will have to stay healthy for an extended period of time, as that is the only way she can find her best tennis if she reaches a Major.
