Former ESPN personality and bestseller author John Brenkus died after a fight with depression.
He was the maker and host of the popular ‘Sport Science’ show, who also won several Emmy Awards while he was just at FOX Sports. His death was announced on Sunday evening.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus died,” said a statement.
‘John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.tv, and co-maker and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning’ Science ‘, had fought against depression.
“John lost his fight with this terrible disease on May 31, 2025. His deeply sad family and friends are currently asking for privacy and encourages everyone who struggles with depression to seek help.”
The news about his death led to an outpouring of sorrow from the entire sports world. Former NFL Quarterback Robert Griffin III was one of those who pay tribute to social media.

“Prayers for John Brenkus and his family,” he wrote on X. “The man who gave us the Emmy winning sports science lost his struggle with depression.”
Former defensive ending Marcellus Wiley, who was a partner of Brenkus on his Brinx.tv streaming platform, wrote ‘Rip John Brenkus’ next to a prayer memoi.
Back in January 2023, During an interview with WileyBrenkus opened the struggle to mental health care. “I fell into a very deep depression,” he said.
“I walked in a deep, deep depression and I was downright suicidal.” Brenkus revealed that his dog saved his life.
“(He) came to my aid … And in my suicidal funk I thought,” What am I doing? ” I literally picked up my phone, called my mother and said, “There is something wrong with me. I am mentally lost.”
Brenkus then described his ‘fight’ in which several different psychologists and psychiatrists were seen when searching for ‘answers’.
