The American Lefty Ben Shelton was moved in the cut for the Nitto ATP final after breaking the Zeven-Match extracting streak of Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Toronto on Tuesday evening.
The use of his Monster Serving and High-Kicking Forehand who helped him win the majority of the extensive Baseline fights, shot Shelton to a relatively comfortable 6-3, 6-4 victory, which had the back-to-back third set tie-break victories that he has over the fourth round of the fourth round and Flavio.
“I am really happy with the victory; it showed a lot of mental resilience,” said Shelton. “He broke me a million times in practice and he is really a tough competitor. I have served the sets confidentially and I am really enthusiastic about the chance to be in the semi -final.”
Shelton, who served 13 Azen in the 91-minute victory, will now look for his first victory on Second Seed Taylor Fritz in a rare All-American Masters 1000 semi-final (only the fourth since 2000). Fritz won their only Lexus ATP Head2head meeting in Indian Wells in 2023.
Shelton squeezed Eight Forehand winners and took advantage of an unusual 28 casual mistakes from the Minaur, according to Infosys ATP statistics. He also won 32 basic points to the 29 of the Minaur, so that the Australian 12-7 shot in rallies of nine or more.
“Many guys see me as a server and not as much as a baseliner,” said Shelton. “Psychologically, when I get into a match and go into the lockdown mode and put a million balls in court, my rally ball comes with a lot of weight and I feel that I sometimes surprise boys.
“Being able to win the longer rallies and to be comfortable in my own skin and not the feeling that I am in a hurry to make something happen, a large part of my evolution is.”

Shelton, 22, who was also the youngest American Masters 1000 semi-finalist since Andy Roddick 20 years ago in Indian Wells, will improve his career-high PIF ATP ranking from Nr. 7 to no. 6-Sprong Novak Djokovic-Mocht he wins the title.
Looking ahead to his collision with Fritz, only the fourth all-American semi-final at this level since 2000, said Shelton: “Yes, really excited. I immediately played him when I came on tour. We had a great battle in Indian Wells … he is a big game in the Big Tournamen in the Big Tournamen in the Big Tournamen.
