Eustace says Derby should have beaten Sheffield Wednesday earlier in 3-0 win – Soccer News

John Eustace felt Derby County should have been out of sight before half-time against Sheffield Wednesday, although he was still relieved to see the Rams’ three-match winless run end with a 3-0 success.

Derby traveled to Hillsborough having dropped off the table following a return of one point from their last three games, but they managed to win in style again.

Patrick Agyemang scored either side of half-time, while Liam Thompson was also on target early in the second half as Derby climbed back into the top half.

Derby were the deserved winners, with fifteen shots to Wednesday’s three and 1.64 expected goals (xG) against a paltry figure of 0.18 for the Owls.

The Rams scored 0.66 of their total in the first half, but Eustace felt they did enough to go into the break with a more commanding lead.

“I thought we had some really good chances in the first half, especially in transitions, and we were very sloppy,” Eustace told reporters.

“The game probably could have been out of sight given the number of turnover chances we had, only if our final pass or finish was better.

“That would have been great. But in the second half I felt like we were in much more control of the game.

“When we had those chances we finished the plays and got shots on target, so it’s very nice to win 3-0.”

While Derby sit in twelfth place, Wednesday are still waiting for their first home win of the campaign and, having deducted a total of 18 points, are 29 adrift to safety.

Owls boss Henrik Pedersen was disappointed to see his team struggle to match the performance they produced in last week’s 1-1 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

He said: “We performed very well at Watford but we didn’t reach the same level today.

“We had a good start, we were in control, but the first goal was an easy loss of ball and a transition. After the first goal we kept going, but at 2-0 the game was over.”
