European Curling Championships 2025: Following storylines
As the clock ticks down to Milano Cortina 2026, this year’s European Championships will certainly be an intriguing point.
In the Gentlemen event, Marc Muskatewitz of Germany will look to defend their hard-fought team’s title after their stunning defeat to Scotland in last year’s edition, but it won’t be without challenges.
The Scots, skipped Bruce Mouathave started this season in stunning form, with Mouat already guiding his rink to two consecutive Grand Slam of Curling titles, taking his career total to 12. The Olympic silver medalist of Beijing 2022 will be keen to regain the European crown after the Germans denied his team the chance to claim a fourth consecutive title in 2024.
Also in the field is Sweden, skipped by seven-time European champions and reigning Olympic champions Niklas Edin; Switzerland, led by Yannick Schwaller and incoming hosts of the Games, Italy, led by Joel Yield.
In the women In the competitive battle, Switzerland returns as defending champions, but in a compelling twist that will not be the case Silvana Tirinzoni represents the curling powerhouse.
The four-time world champion and last year’s winner finished third at the 2024 Swiss Women’s Curling Championships, meaning she withdrew the right to curl for Switzerland in Lohja. Corrie Hurlimann will take charge instead.
Considering that Team Tirinzoni is currently one of the two major forces in women’s world curling, their absence opens the door for other hungry teams looking to capitalize. Among those to watch out for are the 2023 winners Denmark and Scotland, who will be skipped Sophie Jacksonand Sweden, led by the veteran Anna Hasselborg.
As it stands, the European men’s teams that have secured quotas for Milano Cortina 2026 are: Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The European women’s teams that achieved the same feat are Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.
