Patrick Mullins, son and assistant of his father, Willie, spoke extensively after their last success in the Grand National in April about the insatiable needs of the Champion Jumps Trainer to continue. The stable expansion of the stable in the top that Handicaps remained on the flat continued on Saturday when Ethic Diamond, the 5-1 favorite, an impressive winner of two and a half lengths of the Ebor, the richest flat handicap in Europe, came home.
The simple fact seems to be that there is now such a wealth of horse talent in Mullins’ County Carlow Yard that it would be a shame to focus it exclusively on the winter code. After all, he is the reigning champion about jumps in Ireland – where he has been undisputed for almost two decades – and Groot -Britain, since 2024.
The flat can also be educational for a horse like ethical diamond who, admitted Mullins, had been a puzzle since he arrived in the garden at the end of 2023. “We have just tried to find the right tactics that suit him, it took me 18 months to do that and now he has won at Royal Ascot [in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes in June] And the Ebor, “said Mullins.” Now that we have a way to drive him, he would probably be a nice race win over obstacles, I think tactics were made to him.
“Winning races on the flat as this gives me exactly the same buzz as winning big races about jumps, certainly to come here and win races, that’s why you do the game.”
The Melbourne Cup – a race where Mullins has been painfully short in the past – is not an option for ethical diamond after treatment for an injury earlier in his career, but the gelding still has valuable goals under both codes.
“He doesn’t go to Melbourne because he won’t pass the vets in Australia, so we immediately wiped it away,” said Mullins. āHe has a screw in his leg of an old injury and that is a straight no-no of them.
“I don’t know if he’s an Irish Cesareswitch -or we let him run in an Irish army, we will have to see it, but I certainly want to move him to a group of two or a group of three at a certain stage.”
Earlier Andrew Balding completed a double value of almost £ 500,000 when Tarrianans (5-1) pulled out many men (9-2 FAV) in the Melrose Handicap before he was never so brave, a recruit in the yard after the retirement of Sir Michael Stoute at the end of 2024, took the first battle of the city of York Stakes.
Rosallion, who was an unfortunate loser behind Qirat, the shock 150-1 winner, in the Sussex Stakes in Goodwood last time, was even the money favorite for the city of York, but the leaders could not pick up on the Furlong Shortere journey as well on the line.

Never so brave was racing in Handicap Company two months ago, albeit at Royal Ascot, where he set up an exceptional version to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes under the 9th 12 pounds, but is now confirmed as a group of one horse and could go back to a mile for the Queen Elizabeth II deployment on Champion day in Ascot.
In Ireland, Aidan O’Brien expanded his remarkable rule of the Futurity Stakes in the Curragh, while the Opportunities-on Chance Constitution River gave the trainer his 18th victory in the two-match group.
O’Brien’s earlier winners of the race include the subsequent classic winners Giant’s Causeway, Hawk Wing, Gleneagles and Henri Matisse. Constitution River, who was cut to 14-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas by Paddy Power, will now probably go to the One National Stakes group in the Curragh next month.
