Lauri Markkanen gave NBA fans a taste of what will probably come this season. After a disappointing third season with the Utah Jazz, Markkanen informed the competition when he dominated in the 2025 Eurobasket. While things look up to the jazzer, ESPN Arrange him surprisingly low after his performance, which shows that Markkans still have some work to do.
Markkanen was number 43 under ESPN’s Top 100 NBA players – surprise surprise, he is the only jazz man on the list – which is ten places lower than his previous ranking in 2024. Ramona Shelburne explained why Markkanen fell through the cracks.
“Last season, Markkanen did not achieve entirely expectations in Utah after signing a monster extension in the low season, playing in just 47 games and on average 19 points and only 5.9 rebounds for the tank jazz. That is just as much on jazz as it is Markkan, which everyone reminded this summer, how versatile and dangerous he is,” Sheldb.
Markkanen was ranked behind the will of OG Anunoby (41), Aaron Gordon (40), Ivica Zubac (36) and Derrick White (26), who are all excellent players, note, but Markkanen was one all-star in 2023. Two years ago he was the most improved player of the NBA. He is able to set up 20-30 on a certain night, and with nothing that stops him, he is a problem for the opposition.
So was the ranking unfair? Frankly … No.
Markkanen had a fairly disappointing all -round season, largely because of his injuries and the jazz tank. The fact that a player has a reputation does not mean that he automatically gets high rankings and awards. As fantastic as Markkanen was a few weeks ago, he has to continue the good times when the NBA season starts.
This gives Markkanen good notice board material
ESPN, who drops him under some of the most elite wheel players in the NBA, should have enough motivation to mark themselves enough to restore himself this season as an All-Star. He should not be satisfied with only internationally dominating. Fortunately he has never been the lazy type, so this is the perfect opportunity for him to show what he made of.
It can be a minute before Markkans recover the respect he once had as a star, but hey, it took much longer than that for him to become one in the first place. If he has done it before, he can do it again. He clearly played with a chip on his shoulder during Eurobasket. Even if he is in the worst team in the NBA this season, there is no reason that he should no longer do the same.
And for what it is worth, he ranked higher than Rudy Gobert …
