With less than three weeks to go until the 42ndi.e The Breeders’ Cup saw a relatively quiet week in North America for high-prestige races, with the exception being the $800,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes presented by Dixiana for 3-year-old fillies on Oct. 11 at Keeneland.
In the QE II, Lush Lips delivered a striking performance, winning by 1 ¼ lengths from the previously unbeaten Laurelin. The British-bred three-year-old filly posted an Equibase Speed Figure of 105 in her first start since a second-place finish in the Del Mar Oaks Presented by Keeneland Sales in mid-August and earned her second stakes win of the year after a decisive 3 ¾-length win in the Tepin Stakes at Churchill Downs in June. With $740,608 in revenue this year, Lush Lips rose in the rankings from outside the top 100 to 48e overall and seventh among three-year-old fillies.
The QE II victory also followed a great Keeneland Fall Meet for trainer Brendan Walsh, marking his seventh overall win and third stakes win at the meet. Walsh currently leads all trainers at Keeneland in both wins and wins, winning at an impressive 27% clip. Additionally, he led all trainers in North America last week with $637,230 in earnings and remains ninth in the 2025 overall standings with $12,312,185 in earnings.
Canadian and American Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse posted five victories last week, highlighted by Time to Dazzle’s score of 3 ¼ lengths in the Franklin Stakes on Oct. 12 at Keeneland. After funding $617,495 last week, Casse narrowly passed Chad Brown to move into third place among all trainers in North America with $19,536,779 in 2025 revenue, $133,322 ahead of Brown who now ranks fourth.
Brad Cox continues to maintain a commanding lead in the trainer standings, with nearly $4.5 million in earnings, but it was second-place Steve Asmussen who stole the spotlight this week. On Saturday evening at Remington Park, Asmussen reached a historic milestone by recording his 11,000e career victory with Beau Soleil, ridden by his son Erik Asmussen. Asmussen is the first trainer in North American racing history to reach 11,000 wins and an impressive 20% all-time winning percentage.
Flavien Prat remains at the top of the jockey rankings for the 17e consecutive week, surpassing $31 million in revenue, but Irad Ortiz Jr. is fast closing in, now just $661,235 behind Prat in second place. Ortiz Jr. made eight trips to the winner’s circle last week, earning $600,208 in earnings, including a three-win day at Keeneland on Saturday.
