Enzo Maresca said he had to make a brutal decision about Chelsea Star despite the FIFA Award

Chelsea won another trophy on Sunday when she lifted the club World Cup after an impressive 3-0 win over PSG, with keeper Robert Sanchez the Golden Glove awarded thanks to his displays in Doel

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has encouraged the club to sign a new “top goalkeeper”, despite the impressive displays of Robert Sanchez during the Club World Cup.

Sanchez has often irritated Chelsea fans with some controversial errors during his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, but has largely remained the first choice despite competition from backup options Filiip Jorgensen.

He was fantastic in the United States this summer and stood out again during the 3-0 win over PSG in the final when he held a clean slate.

The 27-year-old entered around £ 20 million from Brighton, although he was not in accordance with goal and was even dropped by Baas Enzo Maresca at the start of the year after a few expensive mistakes against Manchester City and Wolves.

But Sanchez seems to have turned things around since then and this summer the Golden Glove received the Golden Glove during the Club World Cup after a number of excellent stops.

Chelsea icon Mikel, however, is still not convinced of Sanchez and has encouraged his former club to sign a new shot stopper that is a level above to ensure that they can keep track of the requirements of Champions League football.

“I still believe we need a top goalkeeper,” he told Dazn, spoke as an expert at the Metlife Stadium.

“Robert Sanchez had a brilliant game today, but went into the new season with the Champions League and the Premier League, I think you still need another top goalkeeper who comes in and would compete with him. Healthy competition is important and we have seen that with the signing of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.”

This summer, Chelsea investigated movements for a new keeper after he had rejected an offer by AC Milan for France International Mike Maignan.

Sanchez has made a total of 61 performances for Chelsea and last season still achieved 32 starts for the blues despite its difficulties.

In recent years, Chelsea has had a number of problems with the first choice -after signing Kepa Arrizabalaga for a record of £ 72 million in 2018, but the Spaniard struggled and made a series of mistakes itself.

Edouard Mendy replaced him as the first choice of the blues in 2020 and seemed to be the best keeper of the club for years before he left for Al-Ahli in 2023.
