Thomas Tuchel’s side have performed flawlessly in qualifying so far, winning all seven matches to secure their World Cup place with games to spare. England have been so dominant in Group K that the Three Lions have yet to concede a single goal.
There has been much talk about England’s abundance of attacking talent, with Tuchel admitting he has to make tough decisions regarding the selection of players such as Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden. However, England’s defensive performance is also a real encouragement that a real challenge for World Cup success can be mounted in 2026.
An overhauled defense has proven impregnable in qualifying so far. Squawka have revealed just how solid England have been, with the Three Lions conceding just three shots on target in their seven World Cup qualifiers so far.

England have not conceded more than one shot on target in any of their qualifying matches, while four matches have gone by without allowing a single shot on target.
The success comes despite many changes. Of the defenders who started last summer’s Euro 2024 final, none have played more than three qualifying matches.
Ezri Konsa, an unused substitute in that defeat to Spain, featured in all seven qualifying matches, while the likes of Dan Burn, Djed Spence and the fit-again Reece James excelled when called upon.
Tougher tests await at the World Cup next summer, but England can approach the tournament with optimism.
