England’s best results at a Junior World Cup were their two fourth places in 1997 and 2001. But on Tuesday they were clearly the better team in a match between two neighboring countries. In fact, this was England’s fifth consecutive victory this edition.
The match was played in an attacking manner, with England conceding ten penalty corners and Ireland seven, with both teams conceding a penalty each. England made better use of their chances, with Kaden Draysey leading from the front and scoring both of his team’s goals by converting a 10.epenalty of one minute to end the deadlock and add a buffer in the 23rd minute after a penalty corner.
Ireland were at their best in the third quarter, creating five penalty corners and also being awarded a penalty, but failed to put it over England goalkeeper James Carleton.
The script of the final two quarters saw both teams fail to convert their chances, and England’s better defending helped them secure a 2–0 win.
“It was a great game. Ireland put up an absolutely brilliant fight. It was a real fight to the death. That’s what we expect from them. Five wins in the tournament from six games, but we’re still rated 9.eplace, which we would like to improve when we come back in two years,” said England captain Max Anderson.
“The boys were absolutely brilliant. We’ve been working on this for three years. Some of us played our last junior international match. A lot of disappointment at the beginning after the defeat against the Dutch. We knew (the match) was going to be very important in the tournament to try to get through (to the quarter-finals). We gave everything. I think one word to sum it all up will be ‘proud’,” he concluded.
