England defender Lucy Bronze has confirmed that she played the entire Euro 2025 with a broken leg on the way to glory.

The Lionesses received revenge for the FIFA World Cup final of 2023 by beating Spain via Penalty Shootout.

Arsenal -striker Mariona Caldentey put the Spaniards in the first half, but it was canceled by a running header from clubmate Alessia Russo in the 57th minute.

“What we did today is incredible,” said Bronze BBC One after the last whistle. “Winning on penalties is a great feeling, but losing punishment is a terrible way to lose a final.

“This year it was intended for England. Today we showed resilience. We showed everyone to believe in yourself, regardless of what people say about you.”

The Chelsea star played the pain barrier to help England win a second consecutive European Championship for Women, illustrated by her own leg during the quarterfinals victory over penalties. But she only revealed the full size of her injuries after the final and confirmed that she not only played with a hurt knee, but also a broken tibia.

“I actually played the entire tournament with a broken shin, and then I hurt my knee on my other leg.

“That is why I received a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game, because I have had a lot of pain. If that is what it takes to play for England, that’s what I will do.”

“Very painful.”
