The German organizers had organized the European Championships for athletes with intellectual disabilities in 2023, but did everything they could to organize a bigger and better event in 2025. The opening and closing ceremonies involved marching bands, a unique song written by an ID athlete and a dazzling participation from the Macarena. What was incredible was the support throughout the tournament, with senior teams, referees, referee managers, VIPs and EuroHockey staff all visiting and soaking up the unique atmosphere of the tournament.
With different regulations, different regulations and different needs of athletes, it was a challenge for me as a technical delegate. It is a difficult task for referees and technical officials to ensure that every athlete achieves their personal best while maintaining a safe, fair and fun tournament. A special highlight for me was seeing the first international ID match refereed by two referees with ID. The final was held on the stadium field just before reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands played against France. Our England team were silver medalists in their division. With England set to host the EuroHockey Championships in 2027, I would highly recommend getting involved with your local ID hockey set-up as it really is worth it.
