Engels beat Reid Detmers in arbitration

The Angels beat the southpaw Reid Detmers in arbitration, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. He will be paid at the team’s desired rate of $2.625 million, instead of his camp’s stated figure of $2.925 million.

Detmers is having a strong season in which he worked as a full-time reliever. The former 10th overall pick threw 63 2/3 innings of 3.96 ERA ball while striking out more than 30% of batters he faced. He made his first three career saves, but mainly worked in a leverage role up front Kenley Jansenduring which 13 holds were collected.

The season ended somewhat sour, as Detmers was placed on the injured list in mid-September with an elbow infection. This is not expected to affect him if he goes to camp. He will look to rebuild as a starter, the role he held for the first four seasons of his MLB career. Detmers has shown flashes out of the rotation, but has been up and down, ultimately posting an ERA of nearly 5.00 over 75 career starts. He projects as the third arm in Kurt Suzuki’s rotation behind him Yusei Kikuchi And Jose Soriano. The Angels are counting on a handful of recovery types — likely including Detmers, as he posted a 6.70 ERA in his most recent rotation work — to fill out the back of the staff. Grayson Rodriguez And Immetry are the favorites for the last two spots.

Detmers was the only Angel player to go to a hearing this year. His loss is only the second for the players among the nine cases announced so far.
