Emma Raducanu trains with Francisco Roig and hopes for 2026

Emma Raducanu hopes to develop a better basic level in 2026, so that she can dictate matches more often and worry less about her opponent’s strengths.

The British number one has just started a month of pre-season preparation with coach Francisco Roig in Barcelona.

Work in London has been mainly gym-based in recent weeks as the 2021 US Open champion recovers from minor bone bruises in her right foot, which led to her withdrawal from two exhibitions in the United States.

This season, the world number 29 played 50 matches for the first time in her career and is now looking forward to seeing what Roig can add to her game.

“He wants me to concentrate a lot more on building a better Emma Raducanu and a better basic level,” said the 23-year-old.

“It’s something I don’t think I’ve necessarily done before. I’ve always been more tactical, just exploiting their weaknesses if they had them, and trying to be very cunning.

“And it works. But the ideal is that you don’t necessarily have to think too much about the other players – you can just go about your game and know that you can win.

“He is trying to build better quality, not necessarily by changing my physiological capabilities, but by using better technique, better timing and better movements.

“I think a goal of mine is to be able to dictate the game a lot more, so I don’t necessarily have to run as much.”
