Villa provided the perfect response to last weekend’s defeat at Liverpool after a thrashing of high-flying Bournemouth at Villa Park.
Emi Buendia opened the scoring for the home side with a brilliant free-kick, before Amadou Onana’s low drive doubled the hosts’ lead before half-time.
Villa had Emi Martinez to thank for maintaining their two-goal lead. The Argentine was alert to make a brilliant save from Alex Scott’s deflected effort, before going one step further to keep out Antoine Semenyo’s penalty, awarded after a Morgan Rogers handball.
That save set up Villa, who scored a third when substitute Ross Barkley headed in from a corner. Another debutant, Donyell Malen, completed the score five minutes later.
Emery was delighted with the performance of his team, which continues to recover from ‘a poor start to the season’. The win was a fifth in six Premier League games for Villa, and Emery said their performances should set the standard going forward.
“I’m very happy with the win. We are recovering from a bad start to the season,” he told Sky Sports.
“The physical effort was a huge effort and to manage the team with different players with the effort we needed, we can be proud after the match.
“This is the level of the players. We try to set our standards in everything, every day it is important how we prepare the match and the quality of the players. Fantastic goal and Emi has the quality to score set goals. How the players got the commitment before the match to concentrate and in the way we played is really something. This is how we build and try to recover, feeling better in the league and the Europa League to get the performances we need for the future.”
“Now our balance in the team is better with the players, more focus and we get the challenges we have. The players respond well on the field.”
“Very important how we finished today, winning and feeling good.”
