Union Electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday inaugurated India’s first hardened Glass production -unit unit set up by OptiMus Infracom in collaboration with US material technology Major Corning. The factory, located in Noida, makes protective tempered glass used for screens of mobile phones.“Optiemus is the new jewel in the fast-growing electronic production ecosystem in the country. By the end of this year, Corning’s production will also start,” Vaishnaw said at the launch, PTI said, PTI said.According to Optiemus, the NOIDA facility has been established with an initial investment of RS 70 Crore. It starts with an annual installed capacity of 2.5 crore units and creates more than 600 direct jobs. In the second phase, the company plans to scale up production to 20 crore units per year for both domestic and export markets with an extra RS 800 CRORE investment.Vaishnaw noted that the Indian electronic production sector has grown six times over the past 11 years and has achieved a production value of RS 11.5 Lakh Crore, with export of RS 3 Lakh Crore and direct and indirect employment for 25 Lakh people. At Optiemus he insisted on expanding his research team from 40 to 400, and emphasized that design and product development would be central to the future power of industry.Optiemus chairman Ashok Kumar Gupta said that the company is committed to investing RS 800 Crore in the coming 12 months to expand the production of hardened glass, with plans to generate 16,000 direct and indirect jobs.“In phase 2 we will set up another factory in Noida with a capacity of 10 crore units and a facility in the south with capacity of 15 crore units, supported by an investment of more than RS 450 Crore. The entire RS 800 Crore will be invested in the production of hardened glass within the following year, “said Gupta.He added that from September the company will launch hardened glass under the Rhinotech brand from September and offers a one-year warranty with unlimited replacement. Gupta expressed the confidence that government efforts to curb non-compliant products would help the market traction.Optiemus and Corning also work together to set up a joint venture unit in Chennai for the production of cover glass, which is applied to mobile displays. The production of this plant is expected to start by the end of the year.
