Eight champions crowned on Massachusetts Breeders Stakes Day worth $1.2 million

6 minutes, 15 seconds Read

Plainville, MA – Plainridge Park hosted the $1.2 million Massachusetts Breeders Stake final on Thursday (Oct. 30), as eight $150,000 harness races of the state’s top bred trotters and pacers went to the event on an afternoon of bad weather and off-track. But despite those circumstances, several big miles were thrown as the eight champions were crowned.

Highlights of the afternoon included four new lifetime marks, a triple from Dexter Dunn, training doubles from Domenico Cecere and George Ducharme and three of the four crowned pacing champions sired Huntsville, including a 24-1 upset winner in the glamor division nightcap.

Here’s a full recap of the day’s deployment action.

Champion – Lindy In My Dreams (Ready for Moni-Lindy Of My Dreams) 1:54.4, $3.80

Lindy In My Dreams led into the quarter, where Cash Out Express (Matt Kakaley) was on the outside to overtake the top spot as they headed to the stands. Cash Out Express reached the halfway mark in:57 as Fairytale Moni (Nick Graffam) crossed the finish line first and closed in on the leader. Cash Out Express remained in control while keeping Fairytale Moni at bay, and Lindy In My Dreams took advantage of the cover. Positions remained unchanged around the far turn but as they entered the stretch Dunn found space at the pins for Lindy In My Dreams and the filly shot straight through to win by a quarter length in 1:54.4.

In a multi-horse battle for the lead, Moni Man (Brett Beckwith) arrived first, but yielded to Te Quiero Lindy (Tyler Miller), who then succumbed to stablemate My Degenerate, all in a fast quarter of :27.1. Once in command, My Degenerate was clearly the best of the bunch as he marched fractions of :56.1 and 1:24.4 without any major challenges. My Degenerate then rounded the final bend and trotted home under a line drive to hold off Moni Man by two lengths for the win in 1:53.4, just two fifths off the record.

Tactical Moni got away from third early as Corner Store (Brett Beckwith) overtook Global Heritage (Yannick Gingras) for the lead in a smooth:26.4 quarter. But Dunn immediately moved first after that, took command at three-eighths and never looked back from there. Tactical Moni reached three quarters in 1:24.1 as she fended off a challenge from R Lady W (Matt Kakaley), then saw another push coming from Corner Store at the start of the course. But nothing fazed Tactical Moni, who cruised home under cover for an easy two-length win in 1:52.4, which was her fourth straight win in Massachusetts and sixth straight win overall.

Mother’s Moni (Dexter Dunn) quickly took the lead, but made a break around the first turn. That left Geological as commander of the factions and dominated the race for the duration. With an eight-length lead, Gelogic reached the halfway mark in:57.2 and extended this to 15 lengths at three-quarters in 1:26.3. At the top of the stretch, Geological was long gone, eventually winning by 19-¾ lengths at the line in a career-best time of 1:56.1.

Driver-Brett Beckwith

Trainer-Deborah Daguet

Owner-Donald Mac Rae and Beasty

Fokker-Ross Bonafield

Two Twenty Swift and Perfect Lynn (Yannick Gingras) traded leads before Two Twenty Swift eventually took control with a three-eighths lead. Once on top, Two Twenty Swift reached half in:56.2 and three-quarters in 1:24.3 as Perfect Lynn and Vainglorious (Dexter Dunn) jostled for position during the chase. At the top of the track it was all Two Twenty Swift, who left her competition behind to easily cruise home two lengths in 1:54.2.

Champion – Beantown Dragon (Fear the dragon-Ace of Pace) 1:55.2 (LTM), $15.40

Trainer-George Ducharme

Owner-Michael Goldberg Racing

Fokker-Michael Goldberg Racing

Beantown Dragon came away fourth as Manador took the lead, passing the quarter of :27.4. As the race progressed halfway through in :57.2, an outer current formed, led by Hard To Forget (Matt Kakaley), who was followed by Beantown Dragon. As the group made its way through turn three, Manador remained in the lead, but Hard To Forget seemed to stagnate. That forced Beantown Dragon to pivot three deep as they entered the play. On the way to the track, Manador, Hard To Forget and Beantown Dragon walked back and forth within a distance of each other, but when they reached a deep stretch, Beantown Dragon pulled ahead in the final steps and won by a nose in a new life point of 1:55.2.

Seafood CC (Jim Hardy) had the lead at quarter:27, but saw Beantown Deuce pass from third at that station to take control. Beantown Deuce then took a strong lead to the half in: 56.4 and three quarters in 1:25. Entering the turn, Beantown Deuce swelled and began to separate from the field. He had a five-length lead at the top of the stretch and extended it to 9-½ at the line for his third straight victory in a best-ever time of 1:53.4.

Driver-Matt Kakaley

Trainer-Travia Alexander

Owner-Fiddler’s Creek Stables

Breeder-Fiddler’s Creek Stables

RJ’s Red Devil finished fifth as Seafood Star (Jim Hardy), Courageous Warrior (Matty Athearn) and Jon I Love Dat (Yannick Gingras) battled mercilessly in a fast :25.3 quarter. Jon I Love Dat eventually won that war and reached the halfway point in:54.3. At that point, Courageous Warrior pulled in front for his second attempt, had a fresh Southpaw (Dexter Dunn) on his back and RJ’s Red Devil third left in the wind trailing the action. Positions remained unchanged around the final turn, but as they entered the stretch, Courageous Warrior took the lead from Jon I Love Dat, and then Southpaw passed Courageous Warrior. But it was RJ’s Red Devil who stood five wide in the stretch running past Southpaw to win by 1-¼ lengths at 24-1 and take a new lifetime score of 1:51.2.
