Can the Edmonton Oilers add offense?
Allan Mitchell from The Athletic: The Edmonton Oil Companies is off to another slow start and is a different team than the one that reached the Stanley Cup finals the past two years. We know the Oilers were known for their depth scoring, but that’s gone this year and they’ve become more of a four-to-five-man team.
NHL Rumors: Tristan Jarry is available, but the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly concerned about injuries
In addition to their goaltending needs, they could use a little more offensive punch, as Mitchell writes. However, the Edmonton Oilers are dealing with the salary cap, so Stan Bowman will have to be creative in bringing in players to improve the team. Players like Alex Tuch, Anthony Mantha, Mason Marchment and Kiefer Sherwood could solve the Oilers problems.
What’s the latest on the Vancouver Canucks
Thomas Dance of The Athletic: As Drance writes, the Vancouver Canucks made headlines when they announced they were willing to move their veterans outside Filip Hronek and Quinn Hughes. The Canucks are trying to change their dynamic, but any trade for short-term relief will be on a player-by-player basis.
NHL Rumors: New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames
As he writes, unrestricted free agents like Kiefer Sherwood (whom the team is still looking to sign), Derek Forbort, Teddy Blueger and Evander Kane will be shopped before the deadline. However, Kane will be difficult to trade under his amended no-trade clause. Tyler Myers will draw interest but has a movement clause, so it has to be someone Myers wants to go so he can win.
And what does this mean for Quinn Hughes? That’s the million dollar question for Vancouver. There are plenty of options on the table for the Canucks and Hughes. His decision will most likely come this summer, and Quinn Hughes only knows what he wants to do.
Do the Maple Leafs want to turn things around again?
James Mirtle of The Athletic: As Mirtle writes, this should have been a different year for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Moving on from Mitch Marner would make them a tougher team to play against. It was no longer about four or five stars, but about the team. But things haven’t gone according to plan.
NHL Rumors: Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s a seller’s market
The Maple Leafs won negotiations with John Tavares, as he remains one of their best players under William Nylander. However, there are still a lot of problem contracts on the team, including guys they brought in like Brandon Carlo, Nicolas Roy and Dakota Joshua. General Manager Brad Treliving changed the club’s identity to suit Craig Berube’s playing style.
Toronto continues to look for answers and will look to move on from the guys they brought in, as a coaching change is out of the question at this point.
