Eddie Howe is the same as any other Premier League manager.
He expects to be questioned by the media if things don’t go perfectly.
Journalists wouldn’t be doing their jobs if they didn’t ask Eddie Howe about underperformance and/or poor results.
The Newcastle United boss is expected to provide reasonable answers and explain how he thinks form/results can be brought back on track, if applicable.
However, when it comes to fair and reasonable, the media must respect that too.
A line was crossed for me on Friday.
Eddie Howe was asked by a journalist at his pre-match press conference against Brentford whether there was any possibility of him stepping down as Newcastle manager.
Eddie Howe gives this answer: “That’s a surprise to me…I give my best every day. To the football club, to the players, to the staff. Try to be the best version of myself, inspire the team, win games. Those are the only things on my mind. I don’t tend to look too far ahead. I try to plan and prepare for the club to move forward in every respect. My individual future is not really relevant.”
You would almost think that some journalists now only ask certain questions and then use them as a shock horror headline seeking attention.
No wonder Eddie Howe seemed so baffled by this ridiculous question.
Why would the Newcastle United boss be thinking of resigning???
No one is claiming this season has been perfect, BUT the way some journalists and some Newcastle United fans have gone about it, you’d think it would have been a total disaster.
Eddie Howe has had some incredibly difficult obstacles thrown his way and yet Newcastle United reached a third Carabao Cup semi-final in four years, are a play-off draw away from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League, still in the FA Cup, while seven points off a Champions League qualifying spot in the Premier League.
One headline today, after this pathetic question was asked, read: ‘Eddie Howe stunned by suggestion he could resign as Newcastle United manager’…
Precisely.
No wonder Eddie Howe looked and spoke as if he were bewildered. Why should he have to put up with this kind of horrible nonsense???
