He made his IPL debut in 2009 with his home franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), under the captain of Mrs. Dhoni. His ability to deliver the Carrom ball made him a household name. After the suspension of CSK in 2016, Ashwin played for Rising Pune Supergiant, but missed the 2017 season due to an injury. Later, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) led in 2018 and 2019, where his controversial ‘mancades’ dismissed by Jos Butler caused a huge debate. Ashwin then moved to Delhi Capitals for two seasons before he came to Rajasthan Royals in 2022, where he even created history by becoming the first Slagman who tactically retired in an IPL match.

Nine years after he last wore CSK colors, the veteran returned to his home franchise in 2025, bought for a no less than inr 9.75 crore on the Mega Auction. His last season, however, ended in a bad tone, because he only knew seven wickets in nine games, ending CSK at the bottom of the table.

During 16 seasons, the 221 IPL matches born in Tamil Nadu played and took 187 Wickets in an economy percentage of 7.20 and ended as the fourth highest wicket-tower of the tournament. He also walked in with the bat and scored 833 points, including half a century. In the CLT20 he took 30 wickets in 20 games and played an important role in CSK’s victory campaigns in the 2010 and 2014 editions.
