As both a WWE super star and a Hollywood actor, Dwayne Johnson has seen his reasonable part of the fights, but toe to toe with Emily Blunt on the set of The Smashing Machine Maybe he was his most difficult.
Placed to get to the cinema on 3 October, Johnson sees in the shoes of former UFC and Pride Fighting Legend Mark Kerr steps. The biopic will primarily focus on Kerr’s time that competes in Japan after his success in the He has endured Octagon and the subsequent struggles both in and out of the ring.
Earlier ‘The Rock’ described some of the debilitating combat sequences in the film, including an incident in which one of his opponents on the screen showed him that he saw stars of an overly real punch.
However, that was apparent compared to the pain he felt while filming the domestic fighting between Kerr and his partner, Dawn Staples.
“Emily is one of the greatest actors of our time and the period,” Johnson said at a recent MediaSchrum next to Kerr and director Benny Safdie. “She acts for 10 feet long when she wants to and rooted from the ground in her acting. Those scenes hurt my heart and they hurt Benny’s heart and emily’s and they hurt the heart of Mark and they are hard to watch.
“As Benny said, I have heard him say so nicely, if you love someone as much and so hard as Mark and Dawn did, like couples there are, sometimes the ones you hold the most that you can have the most raw, mean battles with.”
Blunt and Johnson are not strangers for each other. The two co-starred together in Disney’s attraction-based blockbuster Jungle cruise In 2021. A few years later, Blunt would continue to fascinate the audience in Oppenheimer and earn an Oscar nomination.
Dwayne Johnson remembers Mark Kerr’s reaction to seeing The Smashing Machine
Despite the challenges with which Johnson and Blunt are confronted during those scenes, she witnessed them on the screen an even deeper impact on Kerr, the person she has experienced firsthand. Johnson remembers that the strong reaction that Kerr exhibited when the two were present at a film festival display in Venice.
“When we were at the Venice film festival, this was the first time I had been sitting next to Mark before watching the film,” said Johnson. “He had seen it alone a few times and he and I were so together and he is a big boy and I feel his body, look at this all the time, and every time those fights would happen to Mark and Dawn would start shaking his body.
“I looked at the end at a certain point, the big fight scene, and Benny held his hand, and he held his hand, he just held it for the rest of the film.”
