The German Laura Fuenfstueck and Alexandra Swayne of the US Virgin Islands excelled on Friday in Glorious Scoring Conditions in Centurion Club, while they know 67-round rounds of 67 to determine the first round pace at the Pif London Championship, the third stop in this season’s Pif Global Series.
They both scored an eagle in the first hole and five birdies to be managed by one shot from Chiara Tamburlini in Switzerland and the Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who had put in to join the leaders until the Golf Saudi ambassador registered a three-put-boogey at 4 pmone.
English players
A group of five players is still a shot back on 4 under in the Golf Saudi-stunned event, including a trio English players Mimi Rhodes, Cara Giner and Charlotte Laffar.
The superlative 67 from Fuenfstueck helped Team Nadaud, under the leadership of skipper Nastasia Nadaud of France, to take the first day awards with a total of -18, two shots free from the quartet led by South Africa’s Casandra Alexander.
Alexandra Swayne, whose home country has no golf courses because of hurricane damage and is often forced to practice in a field near her house, said that some of her good round was happiness.
“I only saw photos and hit them, and I was actually quite lucky outside of it. You must always be lucky with a good round, regardless of who you are, which golfer, which golf course you play.”
Fuenfstueck in Germany, who recorded 18 top 10 Finishes on the Ladies European Tour, but that first victory still remains elusive, said that she and her team had done a lot of practice last week after a mixed time at the Aig Women’s open at Royal Porthcawl.
“I think today I had a few moments in which I would probably call myself a bit of luck. Think there was clearly a lot that last week really went well. We spent three days with my coach here, which was really useful. Long term will be important because we find out what the key is to my game.”
Other contenders
Ciganda was the striking artist of the Golf Saudi ambassadors who can be seen with the German Olivia Cowan and Celine Boutier from France, both still in strong position after opening 2-Under rounds of 71, with Anne van Dam van Nederland, a shot on the back of 1 under.
Large crowds were present when the sun was shining and many participated in the activities on the site, including GO golf clinics aimed at encouraging newcomers in the game.
The strategic leadership of Golf Saudi places the support and empowerment of female golfers in the heart, offers excellent playing opportunities for the world’s best and introduces the sport to new players and beginners around the world with a range of activities and campaigns.
It is aimed at strengthening the golf ecosystem in Saudi Aarabia, stimulating massive participation in sport and promoting the Kingdom as an increasing golf, tourism and investment hub.
