The ongoing federal government shutdown could jeopardize the benefits CalFresh recipients expect in November, San Diego County officials said Tuesday.
The announcement follows guidelines issued late Monday California Department of Social Services. District staff began notifying recipients Tuesday of the possible delay or cancellation of November funds.
The delay will occur if the shutdown continues beyond Thursday. The shutdown began on October 1, after Congress failed to pass a new funding bill.
CalFresh is California’s version of the federal food assistance program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called EBT or food stamps. The program is entirely federally funded, but administered by states and administered by counties.
According to the province, October benefits have arrived, but everything beyond that is up in the air.
“Based on state guidance, the county is advising local CalFresh beneficiaries to prepare to not receive benefits on their EBT card beginning November 1, 2025,” according to a statement from county officials.

In San Diego County, approximately 395,000 individuals in nearly 240,000 households receive CalFresh benefits, based on income.
