MMA analyst Dominick Cruz is not convinced that Dricus du Plessis will be able to close the gorge to Khamzat Chimaev.
In their UFC 319 title fight, Khamzat Chimaev Drus Du Plessis dominated to become UFC Middleweight Champion. He did this in an impressive way, and while we look ahead to the future, it is difficult to present a scenario in which he loses the belt.
Of course Dricus Du Plessis will do everything to achieve that goal. To do this, he has to go back to the drawing board and really find out how he will tackle the elephant in the room – the wrestling bravery of ‘Borz’.
In a recent podcast performance, Dominick Cruz gave his honest thoughts about the skill gap between Chimaev and Dricus du Plessis.
Dominick Cruz’s view of Dricus du Plessis
“He says six months, I will fill some holes, but if I look at it, that’s not six months,” said Cruz on the “Anik & Florian podcast.” “He did not separate once – nothing, nothing. His legs didn’t get involved in his back. He just never put on his back for so long, I don’t think, and you have to have an attack from the bottom to get up.
“If your job when you are picked up, it is only to get up and escape, that is a bit defensive in a certain way. So if you are on the bottom and you are held, you have to get a kind of attacking attack from the soil. Like, you have to go for a single-pijen (Takedown).
“You have to be able to be in balance to get a double leg. You have to be able to get into balance to create space and go to a headline, and then you have to create a kind of attack from the bottom. A kind of attack, so that the person on top of you stops with blanket and he couldn’t really create that.
“If you look at the differential in that specific fight, it just looked like two completely different levels of hunters, because the divorce was not there. Now I could say if DDP came away once, I would have something completely different to say, but he didn’t do it, and he couldn’t. He couldn’t get away once. He couldn’t divorce once.”
“I think DDP beats almost everyone else in the division,” said Cruz. “Only that specific matchup is just really uncovering things, and that’s the thing about being champion.”
