Batavia, NY – The weekly $12,500 Opens for the best pacers and trotters on the property were held again on Saturday evening (November 8) and the winner of both was piloted by Drew Monti, the circuit’s premier trotting racer.
The pacers were first in their Open Handicap match and Lip Reader A (Sports writer) led at every station on the way to his victory.
Davey Day Trader (Dave McNeight III) took an early lead, but Lip Reader A pulled away from third, claimed the lead and never looked back. After stopping the clock in :28.2, :57.4 and 1:25.4 while leading by more than a length at each quarter, Lip Reader A skated around the final turn and skated home under a line drive from Monti to win in 1:54.
It was the third win in the last five starts and ninth this year for Lip Reader A ($4.96), owned by Vogel and Wags Nags and Team Rice Racing and trained by Maria Rice.

Later in the Open Handicap trot, Gone Crazee made one move after the half to win a good move.
Gone Crazee finished third as Dougadougadew (Kyle Cummings) and Biscoe (Jim McNeight Jr.) traded leads heading into the quarter with Biscoe stopping the timer in :30.1. Biscoe then went to the half in :59.2 when Monti Gone tipped Crazee and started to move forward in turn three. Gone Crazee took the lead from Biscoe at three-quarters of a mile but was unable to cross, so the pair were level around the final corner. Then Dougadougadew made a three-high tap just as they headed home, and it became a real horse race. Still in the lead, Gone Crazee put Biscoe away, but he had to fend off Dougadougadew all the way to the line, where he won by three-quarters of a length in 1:58.1.
It was also the ninth win of the year for Gone Crazee ($12.00), owned by Marie Houghtaling and trained by Ron Houghtaling.
Monti also won with Timeto Communicate (1:59.1, $4.14) in the third race, giving him a hat-trick for the evening.
Driver Kevin Cummings also recorded a natural hat-trick in races four through six. Cummings won with I Ain’t No Mack (1:54.4, $6.72), Soul Assassin (1:55.3, $4.18) and Bettor Of The West (1:56.1, $12.30).
Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Wednesday (November 12) with post time at 6pm and there will be a carryover of $2,098 in the Jackpot Super Hi-5 pentafecta bet in the 12th race.
