Egypt missed an opportunity to guarantee early qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and played on Tuesday to a 0-0 draw with Burkina Faso. The result means that the pharaohs have to wait for their last two qualifications to confirm their place at the tournament, because they needed a victory to seal their progress.
In a cautious match in the Stade du 4 Août, neither of them managed to create a decisive breakthrough. The only major threat from Egypt came in the second half when a goal of replacing Osama Faisal Buitenide was ruled. Despite the field of important players such as Mohamed Salah and Trézéguet, Egypt did not succeed in their group’s qualification campaign for the first time.
The evening was further tempered for Egypt when Forward Omar Marmoush left the field with an injury for only nine minutes in the game. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that the player of Manchester City suffered a bruised knee. The injury calls his concern about his club prior to their upcoming Premier League Manchester Derby.
The draw keeps Egypt firm at the top of group A with 20 points, five points in second place Burkina Faso. The point of the stallions was enough to keep their slender hope for a world cup -appearing alive. However, they are confronted with a challenging path, and have to win their remaining competitions while they hoped that Egypt will lose both of them.
The coach Hossam Hassan van Egypt, who led the national team to an Africa Cup of Nations victories in the same stadium in 1998, expressed his frustration with the missed opportunity, but maintained confidence in his team’s ability to qualify. The pharaohs, seven-time Africa Cup of Nations Champions, have a history of wrestling to translate their continental dominance into the success of the World Cup, but only appeared three times at the final.
