Dark font keeps me awake at night to think about time loops and family trees that absolutely don’t feel like it. There is something so creepy perfect about those grim, minimalist letters that immediately switch my brain to “prepare for mind-expanding German sci-fi”. We have identified the text as set Gill SansA humanistic without serif font designed by artist Eric Gill. For the first time released by Monotype, this influential family contains 21 styles, which reflects the design for a wide range of applications.

What I absolutely find enchanting about the dark font is how it is possible to feel both futuristic and timeless. The clean, Zonder-Serif design reminds me of the scary nuclear facility signs that you would see in old documentaries from the Cold War, which is frankly perfect for a show about temporary disasters and family secrets who span several generations. Just like the typography equivalent of that disturbing feeling you get when you walk into an empty building.
I am completely obsessed with how the Dark series used this font to create immediate atmosphere. Every time those letters appear on the screen, I know that I am about to make the following hour frantically and draw family trees that look like abstract art.
What really gets me is how this font Steno has become for “complex sci-fi that will mess with your head.” I now continue to see similar minimalist, somewhat ominous fonts in other shows, all those who are all trying to explode the same “your brain is about to explode” that Dark delivers so brilliant.
