Downers Delight was the fastest to leave the wings of the starting gate and showed that he meant business. Wehadababyetzaboy and Primo Maschio also started, but withdrew and found places in second and third respectively as they paced towards the first corner.
Downers Delight were on a mission and proved it by scorching the opening quarter in 27.2. Downers Delight was in complete control of the race, reaching the halfway mark in 56.1 (28.4)
Steven’s Saloon and driver Jason Thompson drew the right line and advanced first and without cover past the three-eighths marker. Jack’s Shadow N was second in line. Primo Maschio crossed the finish line in third place and immediately raced up the back stretch.
Downers Delight and Steven’s Saloon were at each other’s throats as a team, passing the three quarters in 1:23.2, a blistering 27.1 quarters.
Steven’s Saloon had a brief lead on the outside, but not on the rail. He couldn’t clear the lead as Downers Delight refused to concede.
Wehadababyetzaboy was a non-threatening competitor who raced out of his own pocket.
Downers Delight dug in playfully and muscled his way into the lead in deep stretch, winning by a neck. He completed the mile in 1:51.2 and returned $3.20, the gambler’s choice.
DOWNERS DELIGHT REPEAT
Steven’s Saloon never gave up and finished 2nd. Itsrockandroll A found a late pace and finished third.
Downers Delight (Bettor’s Delight) is owned by Tlb Racing LLC. Traci Berry trained and Pat Berry rode. James Downer is the breeder. Pat Berry celebrated his birthday in fine style by beating both the Mares and Males Open Handicap courses.
