Luka Doncic told the Los Angeles Lakers that he is not going to be patient for the front office Build a competition.
During a dinner in May, Doncic sat with both Lakers -President of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick to discuss the future.
“I don’t want to wait,” Doncic told them. “I have the final taste, I will come back there. So let’s do what we can do now.”
How has it been played since?
Dorian Finney-Smith, considered an important acquisition of the Handelsdeadline, left for the Houston Rockets in Free Agency. The Lakers came back by adding Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake Laravia.
Doncic showed his dedication by signing an extension of three years worth $ 165 million. He has also committed himself to a strict diet and training program that makes him look the strongest he has in years.
“We love the upgrades that we could make in the schedule,” Pelinka said when announcing the expansion of Doncic. “But we will not be satisfied. I think we have an infinite cycle every year to try to improve this team and win championships, and we remain dedicated to that work.”
Yet the Lakers do not see the will of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers.
Lakers have a three -year plan for Doncic
The Lakers have currently bound their hands. LeBron James has a no-trade clause, while Ayton, Smart, Laravia and Jaxson Hayes are not traded on December 15. This means that their trading options are limited to which return is possible for the forging contracts in Rui Hachimura, Maxi Kleber and Gabe Vincent.
Is there a team that can convince both Lakers to a worthy deal for James And Convince him to refrain from his no-trade clause? That seems the only real path to improvement until December 15.
If James plays the season with the Lakers and chooses a new team in 2026, he would combine with Hachimura, Kleber and Vincent to take more than $ 90 million from the Lakers’ books.
That would offer an interesting flexibility, but the greater goal is to have Cap Room in 2027. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic, Karl-Anthony Towns and Donovan Mitchell can all be free agents. However, it is a big one as, considering how much the value of the free agency has decreased in recent years.
The Lakers seem to have a plan. If it doesn’t flourish, Doncic’s patience is really tested.
