Don Hugo (Art Major) issued an ominous warning to his rivals when he outclassed his rivals in the Ultra Air Cup at Menangle on Saturday evening.

The race was sponsored by Don Hugo’s owner Tony Licastro.

Fresh from his success in the Blacks A Fake at Albion Park a fortnight ago, Don Hugo was played wide but was still a firm favourite. However, there was plenty of support for ex-New Zealander Rakero Rocket who is now in Jason Grimson’s stables.

Rakero Rocket jumped out of the mobile to take charge of the first race and for the first half of the event Don Hugo was caught outside the leader with I Break The Line behind the leader. But driver Luke McCarthy decided to go for the lead and crossed without too much fuss.

But Don Hugo continued to pile on the pressure while at the front, running 27 seconds into the third quarter. Rakero Rebel tried to keep contact but Don Hugo was in another gear and he burned the straight in the final quarter of 26 seconds to take an effortless win over Rakero Rebel and I Break The Line for a total time of 1.48.6.

Don Hugo is being targeted in the Miracle Mile, where connections hope he will repeat his success earlier this year.

Luke McCarthy was satisfied after the event.

He’s really taken off here since he won the Eureka. He likes this song with the Inter Dominion and Miracle Mile. He has had an incredible 16 months. Tony sponsored the event tonight and brought lots of friends and asked if we could consider accompanying him when he retired after Queensland. So it was great for Tony and his family and friends that he was able to come out and win the Ultra Cup.

For the past two to three seasons, Leap To Fame has been the benchmark champion. The next level wasn’t there, and suddenly they are. It makes for competitive racing. And there will be some very good racing over the next twelve months. We are really looking forward to being part of the Miracle Mile Carnival again.

So we’re looking forward to these good races coming up.
