These are fundamental NHL tools – but adapting to the pace and the physicality of the main class takes time.

For many fans, the safer bet gives him the top six minutes with the American Hockey League (AHL) Toronto Marlies. There he can continue to build up self -confidence without the constant spotlights. A season in the AHL would enable him to refine his timing and consistency without the risk of being bumped over the line -up if it gets rough.
Yet that is what is best for the team and for Cowan? It’s hard to say.
Why Line Chemistry and Fit matter for Cowan
The line -up of the Maple Leafs is not just about throwing skills together – it’s about balance. Matthews drives alone, but his line sizes still have to supplement his rhythm and cover defensively. By putting him at the superstar of Toronto, his ceiling would immediately test. And that can only be the test that this young person needs. To be honest, nothing has been stopped yet.

Sometimes giving a young player can accelerate the chance of development. It happened with Byies. Why not Cowan? Coaches occasionally use the preseason to give Rookies a taste of the big stage, and Cowan could benefit from that kind of appearance – even if it doesn’t remain.
But here is the risk: if he is struggling and degraded, that could take his confidence before it is fully established. Yet the pushback here is that not much does not seem to be this young person. Trust “shom-fice” cowan plays. For a young player who still develops his mental resilience, can a huge bump in the way longer to recover? Or, for Cowan, not that much?
Matthews remains a constant, but patience is the wider movement
In the midst of all this speculation, one thing is not questioning: Matthews himself. His score is elite, his Defensive game continues to sharpenAnd he is stable, regardless of who is going next to him. He doesn’t need a rookie to lift his game – but those who end up next to him must be ready to keep up.
Most evaluators see that Cowan ultimately fits like a central six attacker, whereby the potential can rise higher if he continues. That is not a disappointment – it is a realistic and exciting projection. By giving him a gradual introduction, perhaps with the Marlies this season and a number of NHL minutes test, he places him in the best place to succeed in the long term.

Cowan and Byies represent the future of the Maple Leafs, and there is no reason to hurry. If Nylander is locked up on the wing of Matthews, will the rest of the line -up fall more naturally into place? Coaches will tinker all season, looking for play-off-ready combinations. But the theme should remain the same: Rookies grow best if you give them room to learn, not when you saddle them with immediate pressure.
Yet we do not know whether Cowan has the heart of a lion. If he does that, could learning besides Matthews his play in ways in ways that fans can’t even imagine?
