Dodgers ‘Hopeful’ Will Smith returns for late season

Los Angeles Dodgers -Catcher Will Smith has been on the injured list since 9 September, but has to do with a break in his hand since a fault ball struck him on 3 September. La originally thought it was a deep bone button bruising, especially after the first test was clean, but extra imaging revealed a Huierde fracture.

Smith is currently wearing a splint on his hand and will try to be performed for the late season, but that all depends on how much pain he is next week.

Manager Dave Roberts repeated that Smith’s return is in doubt in question, but he still has the hope that his all-star backstop will be back in time for the baseball of October.

“Optimistic that he will come back at some point, doubtful that it is the regular season,” said Roberts prior to their match against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday evening. “If we have it available for the late season, we are still hopeful.”

Even president of baseball surgery Andrew Friedman spoke about the somewhat random nature of the injury, especially so late in the season.

“It’s baseball. It’s what happens,” said Friedman. “Of course there are all kinds of different injuries and nobody will feel sorry for us. We have to do our best to hold the fort until it is back.”

Those who hold the fort will be Rookie-Backstop Dalton Rushing, and Ben Rortvedt, formerly a Triple-A catcher who was taken over in the Trade Deadline with a few other prospects.

Rushing had a short injured list -stint of his own, also due to a wandering error ball and two days after Smith, but was back with the team after he had taken a little more than a week off. However, Rortvedt has emerged as a more than above option behind the dish.

In his sample size of 15 games with the Dodgers, Rortvedt has a .270/.341/.324 sloping line with three RBIs and two extra basic hits. On Tuesday evening against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rortvedt hit his first home run as a Dodger.

He has been welcomed for his framing options and also above-average defense, which should at least give fans a little lighting until Smith is back in the Dodgers battery.
