More news: Top Japanese free agent wants to eliminate Dodgers from MLB
May spent the first five seasons of his career with the Dodgers, and was traded to the Boston Red Sox at the July trade deadline midway through his sixth season. In exchange for May, the Dodgers received outfielders James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard.
Despite being traded from the San Francisco Giants to the Red Sox as part of the Rafael Devers trade and then re-dealt to the Dodgers, Tibbs posted a .900 OPS with Double-A Tulsa and finished the season with 20 home runs.
“It’s hard to think of another player who has experienced more in a first full season. He was traded twice and still successfully made his way to Double-A,” said Will Rhymes, Dodgers vice president of player development. MLB.com. “It speaks to his resilience, which is such a valuable trait. Everyone knows his hitting ability, but I was also impressed with his defense in the outfield and at first base.”
As for Ehrhard, the outfielder stole 37 bases in 2025, along with 14 home runs and 30 doubles. After the trade to LA, he posted an .857 OPS with Tulsa.
“He never takes a pitch on either side of the ball; he’s grinding and competing with the best of them,” Rhymes said. “We like the way he impacts the game with his speed on the bases and in the outfield, in addition to being a well-balanced hitter.”
Parting with May always made sense as he didn’t fit into the starting rotation due to the abundance of pitching talent on the Dodgers roster, but the team also got a good return package in Tibbs and Ehrhard, which will help them in the near future. May is now a free agent after struggling with the Red Sox.
