Dino Prizmic secured an early exit in Nicolas Jarry’s BCI Seguros Chile Open campaign on Monday when he defeated the local favorite 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the opening round.

Despite dropping four match points on Jarry’s serve in the seventh game of the decider, Prizmic prevailed against the 2023 champion to earn his first tour-level victory on clay since his run to the quarter-finals in Umag in July. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he won 70 percent of his first-serve points and converted five of the 13 break points he earned. The 20-year-old qualifier will next face Vilius Gaubas or Matias Soto.

“The feeling is incredible,” Prizmic said. “I’m so happy that I’m getting better every match. I’m just enjoying every match here, and it’s very important for me to be part of this tournament.”

Jarry, born in Santiago, was making his sixth consecutive appearance at the ATP 250 and hoping to earn his first tour-level win since beating Joao Fonseca to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon in July.

Yannick Hanfmann lost just three matches in a dominant first-round performance at the BCI Seguros Chile Open on Monday, as he eased past Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-0, 6-3.

Hanfmann, who leads Lajovic 2-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, is a two-time quarter-finalist at the ATP 250 event in Santiago. The 34-year-old German scored 22 winners against Lajovic and will next play fourth seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

In other action, seventh seed Francisco Comesana saved one match point on his way to a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4) victory over Pedro Martinez. Comesana now leads the Spaniard 2-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series and will play Andrea Pellegrino in the second round.

Italian qualifier Pellegrino recorded his third tour-level win and first this season with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory against Argentine qualifier Alex Barrena. Pellegrino won the doubles title in Santiago in 2023 with Andrea Vavassori.

“It feels great to win,” Pellegrino said. “When you get out of qualifying after winning a few matches, it’s always great. In the first set I started very well with good intensity and he missed a little too much. And the second set it was 2-2 and I lowered my level a bit and he played much better. The third set is always a battle.”
