The NSW police say that charges still have to be pressed against a man in custody treated in the hospital after no fewer than 100 shots have been fired in the inner West of Sydney.
De Schoten called over a two -hour window between 7.45 pm and 9.30 pm on Sunday in Croydon Park, which wounded countless people.
Streets were closed and the area was placed in Lockdown when the police launched a major operation after reports from a man who shot without distinction to motorists, including police cars who traveled past Georges River Road.
The police confirmed to SBS News that they are still on site because the investigation is underway.
Described as a “active shot situation” by the police, the tactical police unit was called in to arrest a 60-year-old man of a unit above a company along the busy road.
Acting superintendent Stephen Parry said reporters that it is unclear how many shots have been fired, “but there could have been somewhere between 50 and 100 shots”.
He said that countless vehicles and buildings maintain gun shots and damage during the incident, but a clearer picture would be available in daylight.
Parry said that the scene was “fairly quickly” secured and the officers involved praised.
“They showed extreme levels of courage in doing what they did,” he told reporters in a press conference in the late night.
“They were a number of times under fast fire gun shots and all had to be praised for their actions.”
He could not confirm whether officers also fired their weapons during the impasse.
Paramedics treated 16 people on the spot for minor injuries, some of whom were injured by crushed glass while their windows were hit by the bullets and others were treated for shock.
Two people were taken to the hospital after they had been treated by paramedics.
A man in the fifty appeared in the Hospital of Canterbury with wounds in his neck and head.
He was later transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.
The 60-year-old man is under police detention in the Bankstown Hospital and is expected to be questioned on Monday and formally charged.
Firearms, including a gun with a high Caliber, were also seized during his arrest, the police said.
