Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report Recently wrote an article with some trade ideas for teams in the competition, including a deal in which the Phoenix Suns Devin Booker would be sent. On the market, he would become a member of Kevin Durant on the Houston Rockets, which was also traded this summer.
The hypothetical trade that Hughes wrote would send Phoenix Booker to Houston in exchange for Fred Vanvleet, Reed Sheppard, Steven Adams, Jeff Green EN 2027 and 2029 First round Picks (via PHX). If that deal went on, the Suns and Rockets would effectively exchange gratings from last season to next season.
With Booker and Durant participating in the rockets.
Do the Suns have to make this Devin Booker?
The Suns have made it clear that they have no plans to exchange booker. They want him to become a sun for life, proven by the record -breaking expansion they handed over him out of season this season. And based on everything he has mentioned, Booker also wants to stay in Phoenix.
But that is not the question. Instead of asking: “Will the Suns book book?” The question should be: “Should the Suns offer book?”
If the Suns were to exchange booker, it should be with the promise to reclaim their own future. Or at least part of it. This trade with the rockets would achieve that goal, so that they can press the reset button.
They would regain their design capital in 2027 and 2029, which would help them rebuild with Jalen Green, Kaman Maluach, Reed Sheppard and Rasheer Fleming first.
That said, it may not be worth it. Booker, Green, Dillon Brooks and the rest of the current selection of the Suns are probably not good enough to compete in the West. But at the moment the trade booker can cause more damage than it would be worth.
Booker has committed his entire career at the Suns organization. And in turn they have committed themselves to him. Despite their many failures and miserable movements, there is one thing that the suns are not accused of: not trying.
Perhaps if the Suns was lucky in the lottery, the return of their picks from 2027 and 2029 would be back in a booker trade with the rockets. They can get franchise center pieces. Building blocks for the organization.
But is that risk worthwhile to give up the booker? Lose a decade of loyalty? The chance of cementing booker as a Suns legend forever? Probably not. They are better off to keep booker and roll in with him the next season.
