Devdutt Padikkal smashes belligerent ton, helps Karnataka register second-highest List A chase

Devdutt Padikkal’s fantastic century set up a record chase for Karnataka against Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions Jharkhand on the opening day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad.

The Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground witnessed history as Karnataka chased down a staggering target of 413 against Jharkhand on Wednesday, December 24.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first against a strong Jharkhand batting line-up, Vidyadhar Patil ensured Karnataka got off to a positive start, gaining the upper hand over Utkarsh Singh in the fourth over. Shikhar Mohan and Shubh Sharma struggled to raise the bar before Virat Singh and Kumar Kushagra joined forces to shift the momentum in Jharkhand’s favour.

Both hit scintillating half-centuries, but the star of the show was Ishan Kishan, who hit 125 off just 39 balls. The Jharkhand skipper hit seven fours and 14 sixes in his whirlwind knock. Jharkhand eventually finished at 412/9 in their 50 overs.

Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal forged a stand of 114 runs inside 12 overs with Devdutt Padikkal before being dismissed for a 34-ball 54. Karun Nair, Smaran Ravichandran and Krishnan Shrijith could not convert their starts into big scores but gave Padikkal good support.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batsman hit 147 off just 118 balls, with 10 fours and seven sixes. After being dismissed in the 41st over, Abhinav Manohar and Dhruv Prabhakar played scintillating cameos to take the team to victory. Karnataka won with five wickets and 15 balls to spare.

This turned out to be the second highest successful chase in List A history. The highest is still South Africa’s monumental effort against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, when they chased a target of 435 runs.
