This Greenpoint residence has a stylish appearance after a renovation addressed the wooden frame, both inside and out. On the inside, the work combined old and new with an original staircase and wide plank floor and a new kitchen and bathrooms. The house, at 141 Calyer Street, is in the historic Greenpoint district.

According to the historic district designation reportthe house and its neighbor at number 143 were built around 1868 by John W. Ford. Calyer Street itself opened in the 1850s. A map published in 1868 shows that the two timber frame dwellings were already in place and records them as three-storey dwellings with two-storey rear extensions.

The facade of No. 141 had already been altered at the time of the circa 1940 tax photograph, although remnants of a wooden sidewalk, door hood and cornice were still present. When the district was designated in 1982, those wooden details had all disappeared. The designation report mentions asphalt siding and a modern brick sidewalk and a Street scene 2022 shows faux keystone lintels in place. The now renovated facade has blue siding and white trim.

The 20-foot-wide house is a legal three-family home; as it was in the early 20th century, as shown by historical i-cards. It is currently set up as a two-family home with a garden rental and a triplex above. The home last sold in 2022 for $2.25 million and renovations were completed designer Christina Salway included some changes to the floor plans, the old list is displayed. The main kitchen was moved to the rear extension at the living room level, bedrooms were placed in former kitchen areas and bathrooms were added.

The triplex has an entrance with that original staircase with new post, wide plank floors and a tin ceiling. A glass door at the end of the hall leads to the backyard. The front room has one of four Italian-style marble fireplaces in the house. Pocket doors open into the dining room where the walls and much of the trim are painted in Farrow & Ball’s “Green Blue”.

There is a brighter shade of green in the kitchen, with a wall of green tiles. The windowed space is equipped with wooden base cabinets, a vintage sink and open shelving.

On the second floor there is a bedroom with an en suite bathroom above the kitchen, while the main bedroom is on the street side. In the center of the floor is a closet wall, one of which houses the laundry room, and a full bathroom. The latter has a wooden and copper bathtub, a pedestal sink, a hexagonal tiled floor and a wall of green tiles.

The two bedrooms on the top floor share a half bath.

The one-bedroom garden unit has some of the same vintage and vintage-inspired details, including wooden floors, a marble mantelpiece and a hexagonal tiled floor in the kitchen.

Access to the rear garden from the triplex is via a small terrace. The garden itself has a paved terrace with space for dining.

Esteban Gomez of Compass has the listing and is priced at $3.5 million. What do you think?
