In October 2023, Missouri coach Dennis Gates looked like a star in the making. He had just led the Tigers back to the NCAA tournament in his first season, and after the landing of great man Trent Burns, the recruitment class of the Tigers 2024 went to the number 1 place in 247Sports team ranges. The path to staring was clear.
Then the Tigers became profitless in the SEC. Impact.
Monday morning, Gates and Mizzou landed Toni Bryant. The number 23-ranked player in the 2026 class according to 247Sports, the 6-foot-9 strength forward is an Athletic Front Court player of Zephyrhills (Florida) Christian Academy with physical gifts in abundance.
After he has already landed high score, no. 3 arranged guard Jason Crowe Jr. Van Inglewood (California) high the tigers are back in possession of one of the best recruitment classes in the country.
This time, however, it feels different.

Gates and the Tigers not only bounced back from that Winless SEC season to make the 2025 NCAA tournament, but they have a proof of concept that they are built for long-term success thanks to a mix of experienced players and leaving room to mix in elite middle school talent.
The strategic bet of Dennis Gates
There is a lot of uncertainty in college basketball circles about what will look like next spring. What does the financing look like for basketball in the era of income exchange? How much money should be allocated to first -year students? Do we have to save for the portal? How does our selection even go? Will new eligible rules be adopted? Will the rules change … again?
For some teams, the movements with a low risk in the fall are a strategic choice to keep the powder dry for the period of spring -free freedom of choice.
For Missouri it is the opposite. Gates is completely forward. Only six top-50 players in the class of 2026 have chosen a school because of the worthy concerns about money and playing time on both sides of the aisle. But two of the six (Crowe and Bryant) are Mizzou-bound.
That is no coincidence.
Missouri has put his cards on the table financially, and it is a gamble on Gates that does what he did well: keep his best players even in an era in which it is more profitable than ever to transfer.
In 2023, Gates retained his best three players who were eligible: Sean East” Nick Honor And Noah Carter.
Consider gates in 2024 Tamar Bates” Caleb Grill And Trent Pierce.
Last spring, Gates All-SEC retained Mark Mitchell, Big Breakout candidate Anthony Robinson and a large number of important rotary pieces such as Pierce, Annor Boateng and Jacob Crews.
If that is stuck precedent, Gates may not have to take large fluctuations in the portal next spring. The 2025-26 season has to shake, and it feels pointless to go through at Far ahead, but Crowe and Bryant could certainly participate in a schedule of Tigers with a core in place with two senior guards (Robinson and Sebastian Mack), a junior wing (Other Boateng) and a senior attacker (Pierce).
Missouri has visions of a veteran loaded core that is present, so that the bet on talented first -year students makes a worthy gamble.
Connections of supreme rule
Although retaining important veterans and the willingness to spend high school students is the key, you still have to have someone to sell the program and get prospects at a high level.
That is where Gates has proven that he can shine.
There are not many coaches with more charisma or the opportunity to make contact with the Star High School player today. Gates also made a smart addition to the staff in the summer when he mentioned Tim Fuller as general manager of the program. A beloved figure with deep tires in the basketball world of the base has been an assistant at many stops (including Missouri), worked for Nike and has worked most recently for Overtime Elite. His connections helped to open the door with Crowe and Gates turned out to be the ultimate finisher and hit the lob home that threw fuller towards him.
By recruiting on a role, the development of players and the construction and storage of smart selection, the re -emergence of Mizzou, which was expected to be back on track two years ago, seems to be back on track.
