Deni Avdija’s first appearance in the NBA All-Star Game may not have featured any eye-popping stats; he finished with five points, four assists and one rebound in 15 minutes, but the selection itself highlighted his rise to the league’s highest level, especially for fans who might not follow the Portland Trail Blazers closely, according to Joe Freeman of The Oregonian.
The honor also had historical significance, as Avdija became the first Israeli-born player to ever be named an NBA All-Star, a milestone he said is meaningful beyond basketball.
“I definitely worked hard and sacrificed a lot of time to get to the best stage in the world,” he said.
“And I feel like this is a dream come true for any kid who actually wants to play basketball. Now that I have an entire country behind me, it’s just a blessing to represent it on the biggest stage in the world.”
Although Avdija showed flashes of potential during his four seasons with Washington, his career trajectory accelerated after he was traded to Portland in the summer of 2024.
He is currently having the most productive season of his career, averaging 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists through 46 games. By the numbers Freeman notes, he is one of only three players in the league to achieve those statistical numbers.
Avdija has also developed a strong bond with Portland and is optimistic about staying with the franchise long-term as it continues to rebuild.
“I definitely want to strengthen a good culture in the organization,” he said.
“I hope I stay in Portland. I love the city and the fans, and I think we’re in a good place. I’m happy to be part of this rebuilding (effort) and I really see a bright future.”
