An intriguing mix of local horses, shippers and even a First-Timer will stand in line on Thursday in Delaware Park for the $ 75,000 Blue Hen Stakes, a six-follow test on the dirt for 2-year-old mares.
The Blue Hen Stakes, carded as the fifth race, are accompanied by the $ 75,000 Dover Stakes for two -year -olds.
Trainer Michael Maker sends the likely favorite Blue Hen -favorite in Lilies n Paradise (post 2), who earned a great debut win in Churchill Downs in June before he finished fifth in the $ 225,000 debutante. Maxfield’s daughter, owned by Paradise Farms Corp. And Case Chambers, gets leading rider Jaime Rodriguez looking for her victory in the first effort.
Maker’s Filly will have to contend with a flashy local in jumping the gun (post 7), a home base by armor in imaginary stables that used a stalking trip to win her debut of 3 July in Delaware Park. Trained by Andrew Simoff, she conquered Techstar (post 5) with 1 1/2 lengths that day, and the couple comes together again. Techstar, trained by Orlando Rose, showed a good early speed in that race and could be sharper in her second start.
Another to look is Dorst to Hope (post 8), who with 5 3/4 lengths in a colonial downs -Maidenclaim for trainer Lynn Ashby, one of the three participants for her in the two posts, hull. The HopperTunity daughter bred by Maryland has already placed in two starts and has the kind of late kick that can be dangerous if the early pace is hot.
Two undefeated West Virginia-Breds from the barn of Anthony Farrior add intrigues. The debt gives Honey (post 1) out of a slow start to score at the debut in Charles Town, while Edy’s Flame (post 4) circled four wide to win her first start with 2 3/4 lengths. Farrior also saddles Sassy Fox (post 6), a debut winner of 7 1/4 length in Maiden Claim Company at Colonial Downs, who smartly left.
Completion of the field is the first starter Lunar Buzz (post 3), trained by James Lawrence II for Norman Stables. The Vino Rosso Filly is a half-sister for two debut winners, as well as a 2-year-old Stakes Victor, and can be dangerous despite her lack of experience.
The speed usually seems to be on the outside, which can force the hands of the inner horses if they try to prevent them from being buried in traffic. This race also serves as a local prep for the White Clay Creek of 11 October for a mile disputed.
