Even when players are completely fit, it can be difficult for team captains to secure their services, because Davis Cup tires are played regularly in the week after a grand slam.
Andy Murray played sparingly three years in his early 1920s, when GB was outside the world group, but Smith is optimistic that Draper will continue to play for the team.
“I get the feeling that the players want to be part of this,” he said.
“We, at the LTA, and the players here, you can see that they appreciate this, they appreciate it coming together.
“It is our job this weekend to try to keep in the top group, so that we can try to win it next year, but there are clearly more conversations that have to be held about the planning, to try to get those players who go deep into the slams.
“If you want them to play and ask them for a few days – sometimes to travel extremely far or change surfaces – it will be difficult.
“So I get the feeling that there is a strong appetite to represent your country in Davis Cup, but there is some work to do in the layout.”
A torn biceps and illness have had norrie -occurring Davis Cup since the quarterfinals of 2023 with Serbia.
The 30-year-old has already played 22 tournaments this year, but says that Davis Cup weeks are “very different”.
“It’s always one of my favorite weeks, playing for your country,” he said.
“It’s such a great group of boys and girls – it’s just exactly what I want to do.
“It’s a very different week than a week on the Tour. It’s almost a different rest – it’s such a precious week.
“You could rest, you could practice, you could play another tournament. But for me I always want to try to prioritize that in my career.”
