David Onama believes the Top 10 is waiting for a win at UFC Vegas 110

Featherweight David Onama competes in his first UFC main event on Saturday at the Apex in Las Vegas, teaming with Steve Garcia in a fan-friendly event that, while lacking star power, can still provide explosives.

Fans were a bit surprised by the booking; it seems that Onama was also equally surprised when he received the news. “It was just, I was like, ‘Wow,’” Onama admitted during Wednesday’s UFC Vegas 110 media day. “For the main event, at the Apex, where I lost my UFC debut, to be the main event at the Apex – it was amazing. When I got the news, it was exciting for me, the fans and everyone who always supported me.”

The explosive nature of the fight comes from the striking ability of both Garcia and Onama, with the latter, for one, looking to keep the fight going. Even though he has a handful of submission wins under his belt.

“For me it’s going to be on the feet. I don’t know what his game plan is, but yeah, most of the time it’s going to be standing.”

The 31-year-old is ranked No. 13 in the featherweight division, behind Garcia’s No. 12, and believes a win this Saturday will earn him a spot in the top 10.

“A win over Steve Garcia will put me in the top 10 [of the] certainly divisive,” said Onama. “A victory over him would certainly give me a boost. Especially a main event against a strong opponent will definitely put me in the top 10.”
