“If you can communicate better, you will add at least 50 to 100 percent to your assets” – David Fishwick
David Fishwick is the Maverick behind Burnley Savings & Loans-Popularly known as Bank of Dave-Die have channeled the lessons of the Financial Crisis of 2008 to build a thriving, First Bank.
A home-made entrepreneur, he launched his business empire from the ground without formal qualifications, and transformed one minibus and £ 27 win-in a multi-million pound company that banking, real estate, media, vehicles and more.
Fishwick, which hurried fear and bureaucracy, challenged the status quo when worldwide banks refused to support local companies and emerged as a bestseller Sunday Times author, two-time BAFTA winner and the subject of two Netflix documentaries.
In this exclusive interview with The Champions Speakers AgencyHe shares how he has made adversity in opportunities and practical collection restaurants for the next Gulf of Disruptors and community-oriented financiers.
Question: Which gaps did you see in the banking system in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis that led you to launch your own community bench?
David Fishwick: “Well, at the end of 2008, early 2009 my minibus customers came to me, as they had done for years and years, and they wanted finance for the bus.
“I used to fill in the forms, sent them to the local bank and the banks would give me the money, and the customer would get the bus. But guessed it all stopped and it stopped at night. The banks just stopped borrowing the customers.
“I thought, I didn’t do something wrong, did they have a problem? Do they have a CCJ? And do you know what – they had done nothing wrong. The banks literally stopped money.
“So I thought I stop selling minibuses, what a problem would be – I am the largest supplier of minibuses in the country – or, if I leave these people, why don’t I borrow the money? They pay me back; they get the bus – we will try that.
“So that’s what I did, and you know what – people paid me back. Companies paid me back. There is nothing wrong with the big British audience in this country – the problem is the banks.
‘So, I thought, well, okay, can I make things bigger? Can I then start borrowing to other companies that are not related to the minibus industry?
“Well, I started borrowing money to people, they started to pay me back, and I thought, this bank malarkey – it’s not that difficult. So that’s why I left for this challenge, and it turned out to be a huge one.”
Question: Building “Bank on Dave” was a daring move in a heavily regulated sector. What were the most valuable lessons you learned from that experience?
David Fishwick: “What I learned about creating couch on Dave is, if you take it into account, you can achieve something. If I can inspire people, that would be great.
“In life I have a series of rules and four of them are really important. Rule number one never loses money, and rule number two has never forgotten the number one rule.
“But rule number three and four are super important – rule number three is that you should never give up, and rule number four, the most important rule of all, is that you never have to give up. Place one foot for the other and just keep going.
“If you go after a financial institution, you’re opposed to massive supervisors, you’re up against the banking systems of the world and everyone tries to stop. You should never just push giving up. There is always a way, the use of trust and self-confidence.
“If you don’t have enough self-confidence or enough confidence, then I can help you, I can teach you. I am not born with self-confidence and trust-niemand is that but you learn how you can use it, how you can get it. In my conversations I can actually learn you trust and self-confidence, and if I can, someone can, someone can.”
Question: What practical collection restaurants can they be looking for sustainable growth for managers?
David Fishwick“One of the things I like to talk about in my conversations is how people can learn to communicate better. If you can communicate better, you will add at least 50 to 100 percent to your ability. I can teach you how to communicate at all – I had no skills at all when I started, but I can certainly teach you how to let this happen. Communicating is super important.
“Most people are stuck in a box in a company – they ultimately do everything themselves. For example, if you are a hairdresser, you wipe up, you clean up, you take on all phone calls, you cut the hair of people, you do the permanent, you do the accounts, you do everything.
“What I like to do is come by and people learn how to step outside the box, look inside and see where things might go wrong or things can be done better or differently. Then I can help you go to the second, third and fourth company instead of being stuck in the first.
“The faster I can make you superfluous in that first company, the faster I can get you on the second, third and fourth, and you become a multi-business company.
“I started with one company and now I have six-me I have built six multi-million pounds from zero in all different sectors, from real estate to media to banking to leasing, to acquiring and leasing land.
“And my biggest company is in America it is an investment company. I am autodidact, and that is the largest thing I have. I can teach you to do it in this country or two and a half thousand miles away. The choice is yours.”
