Twins Right -handed David Festa has been on the wounded list since the end of July due to shoulder inflammation. Head coach Nick Paparesta tells Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press That noticed that surgeon Dr. Keith Meister believes that Festa has neurologically thoracic outlet syndrome. Festa goes to another doctor and then a formal plan will be assigned.
It is a potentially ominous diagnosis, because the thoracic outlet syndrome can considerably change the course of the career of a pitcher. Back in 2023, Jesse Dougherty from the Washington Post Has done thorough research and noted that there are two different varieties.
One type is known as a venous or vascular tos. Although this is a serious medical condition that often includes life -threatening blood clots, it seems to have fewer long -term effects in terms of throwing a baseball. Merrill Kelly Is the poster boy for repairing this type of TOS operation. Kelly went under the knife in 2020, but has since started 132 with a 3.59 earned run average. Zack Wheeler A blood clot had recently removed from the Phillies and was recommended for venous TOS operation.
The second type of Tos is neurogenic, which seems to have a greater impact on throwing. Paparesta used the word ‘neurological’ to describe Festas to’s, but it is possible that he meant neurogenic. Stephen Strasburg” Chris Archer And Matt Harvey are one of the most famous example of pitchers who made the diagnosis of neurogenic tos and never really seemed to be the same.
Strasburg was one of the best pitchers in the past decade. He closed things with an excellent season 2019. He gave the Nationals 209 innings that year with an ERA of 3.32. He then added another 36 1/3 innings in the late season with a 1.98 ERA, which led the NATS to a World Series title and won himself World Series MVP in the process. But then nerve problems appeared. He underwent the TOS operation in 2021. His repeated attempts to get back on the hill did not work. He only made eight performances after the 2019 season and eventually retired.
Archer threw 882 1/3 innings during the 2015 to 2019 seasons with a 4.05 ERA and 27.8% strikeout rate. He underwent the TOS operation in 2020. Then he registered 122 innings with an ERA of 4.57 and 20.2% strikeout percentage. Harvey had an ERA of 2.53 and 26.6% strikeout percentage due to its first 427 innings, but was then undergoing surgery in 2016. In the last 446 2/3 innings of his career, he had an ERA of 6.15 and 17% Strikeout.
Festa entered 2024 as one of the top perspectives in the competition. He made his Major League debut last year and threw 64 1/3 innings for the twins. His 4.90 ERA was not particularly impressive, but he spent 27.8% of the batters with a walking speed of 8.3%.
This year he was brought back and forth between the Majors and minors. He missed a large part of May, while on optional allocation, due to biceps inflammation. He was placed on the Major League Il in July because of shoulder inflammation. Around those transactions and injuries he has made 11 main class performances with an ERA of 5.40 but decent strikeout and walking percentages of 23.1% and 8.3% respectively. He also placed a 2.59 ERA in seven Triple-A-Starts.
Earlier this month it was reported that Festa had a setback and would not return this year, with the next step a visit to Dr. Meister. More information about Festa’s status will undoubtedly come out in the future. He has not yet been moved to the 60-day IL, because the twins only have 37 boys in their 40-man selection. If they fill those stains in the rest of the season, Festa could eventually be moved to the 60-day IL to open one more.
The rotation of Minnesota has changed shape in recent months. The club fell in the rankings and revolved around sales mode. They sent out the approaching free agent Chris Paddack but also brought young, controllable guys like Taj Bradley And Mick Abelas well as prospect Kendry Rojas. Some have speculated that they will continue to sell this winter, including making boys like Pablo LĂ³pez or Joe Ryan available. Time will learn or that is a realistic possibility or not. For now, the 2026 rotation mix includes both those boys and Bailey Ober” Simeon Woods Richardson And Zebby Matthews.
