With Kansas leading by two, Peterson would get the ball in for the Jayhawks. Before he did that, though, he clutched his hamstring and immediately signaled to KU’s bench for a substitution. Peterson went straight to the end of the Kansas bench and met with team trainers, and did not return until the end of regulation or overtime.
“I haven’t talked to the doctor or the trainer about it yet, but he said he had to get out,” Self said. “I think it’s just shortness of breath, but I haven’t even figured it out yet.”
Peterson finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in a season-high 31 minutes before leaving.
Peterson, the potential No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, missed seven of Kansas’ first 10 games with the same lingering injury. He returned for the Jayhawks’ Border War game against Missouri on December 7, missing exactly one month.
“He’s experienced this every game we’ve played,” Self added. “I was happy that he got so far and so deep into the game because it happened every other game when the second half started.”
Self did not comment on Peterson’s long-term status.
Kansas’ next game is Tuesday when it hosts Towson. In addition, the Jayhawks have just one more game – at home against Davidson Dec. 22 – before opening Big 12 play at UCF on Jan. 3.
