In a blog post, the San Francisco-based startup said the U.S. Department of Defense’s updated terms made virtually no progress in blocking the model’s potential use for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons.

Anthropic said the War Department will only work with AI companies that agree to “any lawful use” and remove safeguards for surveillance and autonomous weapons.

It says the agency has threatened to shut it down, labeling it a “supply chain risk” and using the Defense Production Act to force the changes.
