Daniss Jenkins is nearing a contractual crossroads with the Detroit Pistons as his two-way deal limits him to 50 NBA appearances, a threshold he is expected to reach on February 5, which coincides with the trade deadline, according to Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press.
With Jenkins having carved out a real role in the rotation during his second season, the timing has led to speculation about a longer-term commitment from the organization.
Sankofa notes that it is widely expected that Detroit will open up a roster spot and convert Jenkins to a standard NBA contract once that cap hit is reached.
The belief around the team is that Jenkins has done enough to bring about stability, with a short-term deal, likely one or two years, seen as the most realistic outcome.
At the same time, Detroit is weighing its flexibility before the deadline.
Hunter Patterson of The Athletic outlined several ways the Pistons could take advantage of a $14.3 million traded player exception, which would give them the ability to absorb salary without sending back the associated money.
That financial instrument opens the door to a series of veteran additions if the front office decides to be aggressive.
Among the names Patterson floated as potential targets are Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis, San Antonio Spurs center Kelly Olynyk, Atlanta Hawks shooter Luke Kennard, Boston Celtics wing Sam Hauser and Dallas Mavericks guard Max Christie.
Each player would offer a different skill set, from frontcourt scoring to floor spacing, depending on which direction Detroit prioritizes.
If the Pistons opt for patience instead of action, the exception won’t disappear immediately.
The TPE remains usable through July 7, giving Detroit the opportunity to reconsider roster upgrades during the offseason rather than forcing a move at the deadline.
